"FFXIV will 'rival' WoW!" -- SE drone

Wow... I love this article:

SE drone says that Final Fantasy XIV will pull World of Warcraft from its throne, though it will be "tough" to do so.

I love the logic here:
FFXIV will rival WoW because it is a sequel...
Wait... I thought each Final Fantasy game is supposed to be a completely different world/universe with it's own story? Also, didn't they say that FFXIV is not a sequel back in June? I guess the similarity in races and art isn't just coincidental.

Nobody has ever had a successful MMO and a successful sequel to that MMO...
So... I guess they are admitting that FFXI is a failure? I mean... if FFXI was a success, then by their logic, there is no way that FFXIV will be a success?

There has never been a company that has a continuously successful number one and two MMO...
I guess this means that FFXI MUST be killed off in order for FFXIV to be a success. That, or FFXIV is going to be a failure as long as FFXI is on the market.

Someone really need to go in and teach Yoichi Wada a lesson in basic business, as well as understanding their own customers ~.~ Remember, this is the same guy that says that console gaming is going to die, right during the time when I'm seeing more people buying consoles compared to any other time in history. I mean, I can see his logic that sometime in the future, it is possible that dedicated console hardware as we know it will no longer be sold and that the model will change, but who knows what will actually happen in the future?

As much as I like Final Fantasy games (that take forever to develop), part of me wants to watch them adopt the wrong technology early and fall flat on their face. Maybe if they are back on the verge of failure, they'll get someone without loose screws.

It is possible that it could overtake WoW considering so many people playing it now are getting tired of it. What SE fails to account for is that Blizzard is already working on another MMO besides WoW. Once that MMO is released it will be the same thing all over again between FFXIV and Blizzard's new game. FFXIV being the popular game until bliz releases their new game.

Oh, sure that's a possibility... I just like the logic that he uses to back up his statement. If predicting the future has taught me anything, is that anything can happen in the future.

Truthfully, I think The Old Republic has a lot more potential. FFXIV just looks like a FFXI & WoW clone

"Maybe if they are back on the verge of failure"

The first time that Square was on the verge of collapse, they released the original Final Fantasy on NES that started it all. Named as such because it was, in fact, their FINAL attempt to stay in business.

The second time Square was near bankruptcy was after they released that horrible Spirits Within movie, and their solution then was to eliminate all projects that weren't Final Fantasy, FF remakes, or FF spinoffs.

I wonder which time you're referring to...

I was referring to the former, when they actually launched the Final Fantasy franchise.

I dunno... their "eliminate everything but FInal Fantasy" strategy seemed to work for them... but right now, they have too many other franchises that are important to them to pull that off again.

Maybe the (surprisingly) bad press on FFXIII will give them a wakeup call? I doubt it...

I doubt we'll see any results until FFXV. Since FFXIII is their first seriously bad game in the single player portion of their franchise (According to how things look in reviews that is) People are still hyped on FFXII and are going out to buy 13 based on the previous game's hype. Once they see the crap that's in 13 (again this is assuming the media's not BSing us) they won't be so inclined to run out and all buy 15. (Note: 13 just sold 1.5m coppies this week in Japan... why? because FFXII was actually pretty good for the most part, so they don't doubt SE yet.)

I'm not including 14 because of the fact it's online, and I honestly don't consider it part of the series, just like i don't with 11. I consider them FFO and FFO-II.
